Stochastic RSI
Stochastic RSI applies the stochastic formula to RSI values, creating a more sensitive 0-100 oscillator for RSI extremes.
What It Measures
Momentum of momentum: where RSI sits within its recent RSI range — amplifies RSI signals.
The Math (Simplified)
Compute RSI(14), then StochRSI = (RSI - Lowest RSI(14)) / (Highest RSI(14) - Lowest RSI(14)) ×100, smoothed with 3 and 3 averages to give %K and %D.
Default Inputs & Tuning
RSI 14, Stoch 14, K 3, D 3 is standard. Levels 20/80 for StochRSI are more responsive than RSI 30/70.
When It Works (Market Edge)
Timing entries within a broader RSI regime: buying when StochRSI crosses above 20 after being oversold can be precise in ranges.
When It Fails
Very choppy markets: StochRSI is doubly sensitive, so it flicks between 0 and 100 rapidly and gives many false signals.
Common Myths
Myth: StochRSI is better than RSI because it is faster.
Truth: Faster means more signals, but also more noise. StochRSI trades more often and loses more to whipsaws than plain RSI.
